Heat generation is a somewhat separate issue from co2 generation. Co2 scrubbing no longer destroys heat, from what I understand.
For the latter, I recommend an algae terrarium or two early on to double dip on oxygen production and co2 destruction. Be sure to put one or two deodorizers next to it to deal with the polluted oxgen (from polluted water)-extra oxygen!
A single coal generator won't usually produce enough heat to overheat itself. It MAY make things too hot for plants to grow, or make your duplicants uncomfortable.
Long term cooling pretty much needs to be done via steam turbines (which destroy heat) or locating a cold geyser of some sort.

The coal generator produces 9 kDTU of heat which isn't much and if made from usual starting material has an overheat temp of 75C. Water has to be around 100C to even be steam so for this particular building steam is not beneficial and probably harmful.
Using steam to COOL things is something of an advanced technique-first you have to pull heat out of the thing you want to cool, then dump the heat into water/steam before sending the heat on to the steam turbine. As much of this process is extremely hot, your ability to fix things if you mess up will be...limited.
