How to build the Great Monument?
The base of the monument needs Steel & Obsidian.

I can figure out steel production but where/how do you get Obsidian?
I've only even seen a few blocks of it on geysers...

Mostly found in volcanic biome, which is the bottom most layer (below the oil biome).

Ok so I've found the Volcano biome by digging down and worked out how to make/use Exosuits.
But the only Obsidian I see in completed submerged/surrounded in Magma.

How do I deal with it?
And how much heat can Exosuits take?
I'm guessing my Dupes shouldn't go swimming in Magma...

Dupes in exosuits can last a while in lava; they slowly lose hp in the same way a non-exo suit dupe would lose hp in scalding water let's say, but they can get a lot of stuff done. In fact it's how I would recommend doing business there as otherwise it takes too much time to cool down the lava to solid form.

So the suits wont melt and turn into sand anymore?

I've tried it and yeah Exosuits work how wsc150 says. A brief trip into/thru Magma and your Dupes will be fine.

I have no idea what happens if you just leave the suits in lava for a huge amount of time, but they seem not to take any permanent damage as long as the dupes are returning to the docks as they should be.

I remember working on a geothermal powerplants while back and if dupes stayed too long in 2000+/-c they would scald and then the suits would vanish and turn into sand

And sometimes you get boulder modifier for map (not the default one)

My new bottleneck on the way to monument is Steel production.
The output pipe of my Metal Refinery keeps melting. O_o

I'm using chilled Polluted Water as a coolant, how do I keep the Metal Refinery cool?
I think water is worst as coolant, and it doesn't melt, it get damaged when it becomes steam.

Or you need to cool down water before using it as coolant.

Oil or petroleum as coolant worked much better 4 me, though you might want too cool down it later because oid can get too hot (or store it somewhere far away)

I use -10 to 10, maybe 20 degree polluted water and have not had any problems. Slush geyser is love, slush geyser is life!

You can build the metal refinery out of different material I think, that is one stopgap.

Another cheap solution is I try to build it in cold biome.

Yet another is make a bunch of metal, then deconstruct it as it's getting hot, then make a refinery elsewhere. You can usually make quite a bit of metal before it heats up.

If those aren't cutting it, you'll need to suck it up and make a proper coolling system with an AETN or steam turbine deleting the heat.

wiz plants inside a room as a coolar to lower the temp down before going further

Just make sure dupes can enter room to provide fertilizer. Since the plants needs that in release version of the game.

I haven't found a slush geyser, but my Metal Refinery is in a cold biome; all the times it broke created a lake of polluted water at the bottom of the biome. I've used that as a coolant and it worked, it's temp was about 8C to 10C going in and about 65ish coming out.

I made enough Steel to get the base of the monument down. :)

I'm not trying to be optimal; just bodge my way to completing the monument so I can start a new colony. I've learned so much (mostly by doing things wrong) I want to put what I've learned in practice. My current colony is a mess.

Next I need Plastic, so I need Petroleum, so I need Crude Oil... Any tips for Plastic production?
