I'm losing track of my duplicants
In all the awesomeness of this game, for me it fails in one thing. The duplicants are just name tags running around. I don't know who is who, what their traits are or what should I have them be doing. This surprised me, but I think I know the reason behind this. I played Rimworld before ONI and I was kinda friends with all my pawns. Every one of them was brimming with personality and unique. I think this was because I didn't get them for free, but the arrival of every one was a big event. In Rimworld I can watch my pawns socialize, even fight. In ONI they just sometimes wave at each other.
But I'm a new player, so maybe I'm doing something wrong. I drew attention to this, because it confuses me in game. I can never find the exact duplicant I'm looking for. They are like ants in a terrarium. Maybe I just print them from blueprints too fast.

Then you accidentally stumbled on a great strategic move. It's (in my opinion and experience)better to reject too much than to just take more dupes (unless that's your goal). I try and never take a dupe unless I have a good reason and am stable enough food and oxygen wise to "afford" a new dupe.

My current playthrough I have dupes with names like Einstein, Grave Digger, Juevos Rancheros, Boyardee and Bob Vila. Basically Medic1, Digger1 etc but a tiny bit more creative.

ONI ain't RW. RW, at it's core (and per the developer Tynan) is a story generator first and a game second. Rimworld is freaking awesome for connecting with and caring for your pawns. It was awesome when my lesbian couple got engaged, then married and had a huge (all 3 of my colonists attended!!) party afterwards, the horseshoes match was one for the ages :)

ONI's deep in a different way. I get that people want to compare ONI to RW but it's really doing ONI a disservice. There is nothing similar between the games besides being 2D "colony builders" but (to me) the colony building aspects are so different it's not even really the same genre. Where RW is a story generator disguised as a colony builder, ONI is a (not quite real world) physics simulator disguised as a colony builder.

I honestly love both games for very different reasons. For my tastes, RW is a far above average game, great even but ONI is a sparkling gem and may be my favorite game ever. But that's just my opinion.

Medic 1, Supplier 1, etc is your answer.

go to the skills tab and put a hat on them to differentiate :)
Thanks for suggestions

One thing I do to feel 'closer' to my dupes is build them nice little apartments with their own ensuite bathrooms and decorations plus some nice recreation rooms like a dance club and expresso bar.

They feel a bit more like people than button pushers and wrench turners that way.

Well, let's hope some future update will add some personality to dupes.

I feel like they have about as much if not more personality than pawns in RimWorld, without mods. The only thing that distinguishes pawns is their traits, and it's the same in ONI, but the ONI traits can be a bit more in your face and constantly reminding you of a specific dupe.

I think what it comes down to is quantity. If you make a colony of 50 pawns in RimWorld you are going to have issues keeping track of what any one of them is doing for you, they just become a bunch of ants with text over them as you say. If you keep your ONI colony down to like 8-10 dupes then each one of them will stand out and be interesting. You'll have your cook that farts a lot, your builder that's always starving, your runner that keeps falling asleep and dropping things, your night owl scientist on their own shift, etc. On top of just assigning them to a job and watching them go, there's also the skill tree/hat system, and the neural whatsamawhosits to give them super traits. As somebody who as put 1000 hours into RimWorld playing mostly small colonies and loving the pawn interaction/individuality, I feel like ONI actually does it slightly better.

I don't know, I only have 10 of them. I skipped a lot of printing sessions, because I felt overwhelmed. And I started using hats, but It didn't help much. Now I see them as hats instead of nametags, but I guess they are a little more discernible. I would like to see them do a little more than just work, sleep and eat.

I have to admit I am guilty of this logan's run naming system.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Build them a nice recreational use and allow for some more rec time in their schedules :)
