Base layout recommendations?
I see some threads on Reddit and the forums dating back to last year, but not much on base design/layout that is up-to-date. Any suggestions on a base layout that can be built up throughout the course of the game, and is not simply the result of thousands of cycles? I'd like to find a design that I can use from the very first cycle if possible.

I don't think you'd ever get a consensus. Too many individuals with their own style to ever see such uniformity in a game like this. I personally have 6 or 7 "prefab" rooms I use repeatedly but even those get modified each base to meet the needs to the space/materials/immediate problem or an individual world

General consensus is 4 tiles high rooms and hallways for the main base and 3 tile width ladder chutes for air movement. Everything else is up to you to figure out what you want to do.

What's the reasoning for 4 tile high room, sorry I'm a total newbie to the game.

styatues plus molding high decor or better air movement also more flexibility on what you wanna build

Building height is at max 4 tiles so 4 tile high rooms can fit everything you need into it. It's a modular design since you can do it for every room and you can be sure that it can fit anything and everything you might need. Its also handy for fitting painting or other decorations above smaller buildings like your bed or dinning table.

Also it's the max height a dupe can reach when digging.

4 tiles gives the most space:use ratio. Like bathrooms can fit 4 sinks and 4 toilets if the room is 64 tiles total. 4 x 16. Barracks gets 8 cots and room for paintings to boost decor. It really does depend on playstyle. I like to limit my shifts to four dups so I don't need more than one bathroom designed as above. Also, my barrack can hold two shifts of dups in this fashion, again, just playstyle.

I'm not necessarily looking for a consensus, just trying to get some options :) Thanks to everybody who has posted their suggestions, keep 'em coming!

I hope you are joking. I'm not holding my breath but I am hoping.

Here is the basic starter base I use. The layout may vary due to map generation, but the basics are there.

In early game stage, when dupes still have low athletics and run slowly, you want a layout that minimizes their movement time. This means you should use as less ladders as possible. Dupes are very slow on ladders. Also good is to place all the most used buildings close together on one, same level.

You can build your base however you want but try to leave 3 spaces in a vertical main traffic line so you can fit a ladder, a pole and a tube later.
