There are various resurrect mods on the workshop that let you get around this so you can continue where you left off when you die, and unless you really like loosing everything when you die, I strongly recommend you get one.
Better yet, get Don't Starve Together, which has a built in mode that allows resurrection after death, as well as several nice resurrection mods and a lot of mods that enhance gameplay (DS also has a lot of really nice mods). I run a DST server, and the same players keep coming back hour after hour and build up their forts and fight off monsters and farm and etc.
ONI has *much* more to do than DS, Don't Starve is really rather shallow in comparison. The DS world is not that big, and in a short period of time you have pretty much seen all there is to see and done all there is to do. You can progress through the storyline through the various worlds, and that adds a lot of playability to it.
Honestly, I despise DS, I like DST and love ONI. But you really should try them all, You gotta play DS at least once. And be sure to try out Shipwrecked and Hamlet.
