Is there any way to protect solar panels other than bunker doors?
The doors are still kind of a pain to produce for me right now so I was wondering if there was another more cost effective method of using them as the impacts are almost constant on the surface.

Aside from using shine bugs as your source of light instead of the sun, probably not.

I really hate how surface structures are meant to work in this game. It just looks so silly. For that reason I prefer using the meteor defense laser mod:

Solar isn't supposed to be an easy and cheap source of power. It's supposed to be balanced, not better than other sources. If you need steel look for fossil in the oil biome. Steel production is in itself power positive if you recycle the heat with a steam turbine.

The issue is my base is barely stable at the moment. I have just enough power to keep everything from shutting down but I need to improve the output. I have been trying to get a steam system going but it keeps getting cloged with other gasses and it is taking a long time for the gysers to heat up the water (I am using an iron and copper gyser)

Ehm? How much water did you dump on them? Those volcanoes should heat water in no time. Also if you vacuum the place you intend to put the steam in, you won't have any other gases in there.

Like I said steel production is power positive. Just snake the coolant through a small insulated room with water in it and a steam turbine on the roof. After the first couple of refinement cycles the coolant should be hot and the steam turbine should return more power than it takes to run the refinery.

You get alot of metal from space, use it to "tuneup" ur energy generators.30 raw metal per day gives you +50 % output for one machine (even hamster wheel). For petrolium generators its +1000 energy output (3k total).Steam or solar power are a joke, imho.

Solar is only worth it, if you manage to build at least like half a dozen of them. Remember: each of them produces 380W max - and that only part of the day and while there are no meteors.

If you need more energy, either look into reducing your need and/or build more generators.

Yes, with steam turbines. When they are broken, they will protect your solars.

And will also block all light...

Mesh tiles will block meteors while allowing light through, with no automation required. However, they will need to be repaired, so that will take up a lot of duplicant time and metal ores, so it's not really more cost-effective than bunker doors besides the initial outlay.

You can partially stack solar panels to get more power, only 5 of the 7 tiles need to receive light for the full output
