Shove vols escaping
I've built the refined metal enclosure for them. But it seems as soon as they barf dirt they can borrow through it outside. What gives? Is this a bug?

No idea, but you can probably remove the dirt with an autosweeper before they can get out.

Attach a robominer on the ceiling to break up barfed stuff, more stuff for them to eat as well. Or you can use double tile as their dig range is 2 spaces..

I had a ranch with over 50+ voles and is built out of bunker tiles and has the room size of the sweep area of the robominer. Everytime I go to get meat, my calories count went up by around 500k+ due to the great vole culling. lol.

also, make sure your pneumatic door is higher than your floor (this seems to help)

Put the door in the roof, and make the room so that there is at least a 1 tile space all around it. That way, if they somehow escape, they aren't going anywhere far.

Needs to be 2 spaces.

I just keep wild voles, I don't bother taming them or feeding them.

One food source among many that the only effort I put into it is making a cruelly tiny all metal pen that I shove them into and then forget about until I feel like fetching the meat.

Indeed, that is the most profitable method... but that only works if you got a lot of wild shove voles or if it's not your main food source :) i tamed a couple to increase the population and then wrangled the rest of the wild ones into the pen

I seem to be able to maintain a population of 40 tame / 10 wild with just the regolith from the meteor showers which is more meat than you'll ever need ^^

Screenshot please? Sounds perfect to shove the voles we get from the printer until ready to do a full-fledge farm.

Not able to do a screenshot atm, but all it is is a 6x6 box made up of a door and metal tiles with the critter drop off for wild voles wrangled and a storage container if I want to drop off eggs I get from Printer Pod.

That is literally it. It could be smaller, but I like my rooms 4 tiles high and I just usually make the box square. Oh and I build it where its there is CO2 so the meat doesn't spoil if my Dupes are busy. Its so basic I don't bother with automation like a sweeper unless I'm bored. But adding a sweeper is pretty easy since it uses little room.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Think the robominer would be the answer. It wasn't the door they were escaping through. But borrowing through a barfed dirt pile and to another side of a wall.

Not complicated. Simple metal box with a bin marked to sweep Vol eggs. 9 Vols and 6 eggs in that box pictured. The ones wrangled in space are put in a similar but larger box to fit a critter drop off. No feeding occurs, so they don't throw up anything. It's temp housing till you are ready to setup a proper ranch.

Obviously, don't forget to empty the eggs from the bin. Vols don't cramp, so no need to remove eggs from the box.
