Slime biome: Endless poluted oxygen?
I've got a small slime biome near my base. The Pufts suck up polluted oxygen and make slime for me. I also pump the air past a few deodorizers for my dupes to breath, and everyone's all happy. After a few hundred cycles, the air is so thin that neither the pufts or I can use it, so I shut down the airpumps and algae distillers.

Now a few hundred cycles later, the polluted air is all back! Where did it come from? Does the stuff just appear there? Is the slime quietly sublimating or something? Is there some limiting agent, or are these things just free air?

The slime, ever so slowly, creates it.
You can affect this same thing yourself by placing morbs and pufts in an enclosed area. Eternal slime production.

There are several things that emit polluted gas. Pufts consume polluted gas but emits slime. The slime will emit polluted gas as long as the gas pressure is under 2kg. Due to the devs reworking to make the puft not emit clean o2 anymore, you get more polluted gas back.

Next is polluted water. All polluted water that is not blocked by other gases above it will generate polluted gas at random intervals. The water will not deplete itself unlike its bottle form if its in its natural liquid state. So if you want lots of polluted gas for your puft to eat, make a slip and slide for the polluted water to take the space above and you will see loads of gas generated.

Another are morbs, they have a program that allows them to have two functions. 1st is consume any and all other gases besides polluted o2 in their given paths and release it as polluted o2. The other is emitting polluted o2 til the pressure rises to around 1800g.

Last few 1s are polluted dirt and compost pile.

Yea, I've got a small swarm of morbs, but they only do so much. I assumed the pufts were a zero-net-gain thing, but even if you come out ahead, that's still limited by how many critters I can wrangle. Now polluted water surface area... that's another story. I can mass produce that.

This feels like an exploit. A bunch of stagnant ponds of dirty water making endless polluted o2, and then pump it to a room full of deodorizers? You'd have to manage slimelung germs and make sure you don't run out of sand... but is that unlimited oxygen? Am I missing something?

Pretty much, you can make near infinite clean o2 but you WILL burn a crap ton of sand for it. Even with the rock grainer making loads of sand, its not really worth it. Compare to just using electrolyzers, converting polluted o2 to clean o2 requires more resources for small gains. Heck its even cheaper to convert the clean polluted water from gas gen into clean water and sending it to electolyzer is more worth it than deorderizing polluted gas.

It may feel like an exploit but you have to jump a large amount of hoops to ultilize it so it has little to no risk. Once clean polluted gas gets infected, you either has to chill it or deorderizing it. Then if you create a field of clean polluted o2, you have to be sure your dupes do not have any germs in them or you risk it mass multiplying in them. Pufts are super dangerous in a small corridor since they can cause germs to mass multiple far beyond what is normally allow. Ive see a small gas field reach 200mil germs within a small section and can get a dupe sick super fast.

It's the polluted water.
If it is in contact with oxygen or polluted oxygen, it'll just keep generating polluted oxygen.
