So has anyone managed to create a vacuum in a closed space in game?
I've had a curious idea on controlling gas flow between rooms, as well as removing pressure from closed water cells without using a gas mesh tile alone. There's some potential uses for creating a vacuum pressured room, one being emergency depressurization or evacuating a gas from a particular space in a hurry.

This video of a real world old school vacuum pump had me thinking, since people are using water as a sort of fool proof airlock with a few ladders going down a U shaped pool, what about pumping water into a funnel like pool over a thin air vent, to trap air and potentially drag it down and away from the room or space you're attempting to depressurize? As a sort of seed idea to the concept, unless someone's already figured out a good way to void all the gas from an area by now.

i made a vacuum in a small room, 2x2 with the gas pump in it. used it as an airlock

if you don't have the room made yet, make a ladder of tiles (two spaces thick. each tile one square to the left/right of the one before it, but two spaces higher up.) make sure the two spaces directly above each tile are empty so dupes can climb up. then pump liquid to what will be your top step. the water will get stuck in the corners of the 'ladder' and no gas will be able to pass it. now just dig a space above the ladder and no gas will be able to get up to it.

if you already have the room you want to make into a vacuum, try to:
Fill the room completely with liquid. make sure it's enclosed, have someone mop up all the liquid. space is now a total vacuum

Alternately, fill the room with tile, make sure it's enclosed, have someone dismantle all the tile. space is now a total vacuum :P

works with any size room. just make sure you have a way to get the dupe that clears the room a way to get out or he'll die and introduce gas

Well, yeah, I figured a tile built room would make an effective vacuum, but that doesn't exactly seem sustainable, which is why I reccommended the pump to potentially remove air all the time.

you can make some solid water based airlocks. people can walk hrough water, air can't pass it. even 10 mg of water in a tile will stop all air from passing through it.

air pump could work, but you'd need to have pumps filling all spaces within the room I think, else say 1/2 would be vacuumed out, then the remaining air will dispurse and refil the room. theoretically it would alwyas be approaching a vacuum, but half of anything that isn't 0 will never be 0

There are void tiles in the roid(black circle with a star shape round it), bye bye athmosphere...

Build a larger room (what will be your vacuum chamber) with an airlock connecting it to another, smaller room with another airlock (i.e - an airtight room). Build a gas pump inside the vacuum chamber to pump-out any gas that happens to be inside until a vacuum is achieved and any gases that make it in. Position the pump initially at the top of the chamber and once vacuum is achieved, move it over the entrance (so it grabs the gas as soon as it enters).
Dupes passing through the smaller room into the larger chamber will enter the smaller room and any gases which enter with them from the rest of your base will hang about in the airtight room.

Alternatively, if you want to avoid using a passthrough room and airlocks, there's a neat water-based design here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=870987511 which you can incorporate. It's a better system, since there'll be no gas leaking into the vacuum chamber, but either works well enough.

Just note that pressure and gas density is a thing in this game, so you'll need to have a place to vent all the gas in your vacuum chamber. If the place you're pumping the excess gases is at max pressure, the pump will not work.

This is a good method of setting up storage tanks for both liquids and gases. When you're done setting up the room, just block off the access point, unless needed (say for water storage tanks).
