Oxygen Not Included

there's no way to sustain a base
the basic resources you need to make oxygen are not renewable

there is no way to generate water you have to find it

It's actually pretty easy to achieve 100% sustainability, I'm on cycle 100 with 6 survivors and it's still going smooth. No survivors dead, and my base is so rich in oxygen (albiet contaminated) that I could live for another 50 cycles without any form of oxygen production. Food is a non issue, you find so many meal worm seeds it's laughable. I have a farm of 60 and easily have an excess of 100,000 kcal of food at any moment, I don't even both harvesting them regularly, instead harvesting every 3 or 4 cycles. Oxygen is also a non-issue, storing contaminated soil into your storage lockers after demolishing used Outhouses produces an infinite supply of contaminated oxygen. Your duplicants constantly vomitting from the insane stress and peeing themselves from the lack of adequate bathrooms produces all the contaminated water you need, and the game does not differentiate between them for use in Research, Cooking, and Hydro Cooling, testing still needed on if it'll work for Air Scrubbers.

Where it really gets tricky is if you want 100% sustainability with clean air. To do this, you pretty much just do the above, but then you need to find some Pufts and trap them, most easily is in just a giant vertical corridor so that their Slime drops some hundred odd tiles closer to your base from where you found them for easy pickings. They're nonhostile, so you can just build them very slowly into the corridor, blocking off their retreat and forcing them in gradually. You move your contaminated soil lockers underneath the corridor so contaminated oxygen is flooding up into the passage for the Pufts to consume. At the top of the passage you want gas-permeable blocks so that the clean air Pufts produce as a by-product flows out top and then down into your base, because clean Oxygen is lighter than Contaminated Oxygen. Using this infinite supply of Slime, you convert it into Algae using Bio Distillers, and use Hydro Cooling to reduce heat generated from your power supplies and your Distillers. Now you have an endless, but slow (depending on your number of trapped pufts), supply of Algae, with which to fuel more clean oxygen production and CO2 algae traps. Although, CO2 never really proves to be an issue as far as I've experienced, maybe because of my massive farm helping to filter it. You'll probably need to ramp up your Duplicant count to keep up with heat output and to generate the water necessary. I myself am still busy trying to trap a number of pufts, so far only having 2.

All in all it takes maybe an hour and a half for 100% sustainability with contaminated oxygen, but much longer if you want to challenge yourself to get clean air and give your Duplicants a decent standard of living. Even with clean air, you'll still want your duplicants peeing themselves to generate water, but you can save them the stress of vomitting because they aren't breathing contaminated air 24/7.

There will most likely be later-game tech tiers that will provide greater sustainability and even renewable energy.
I solved my oxygen needs by cooling down the contaminated air with 18 coolers in series to produce liquid/solid oxygen and provide cooling to my base. i create the contaminated oxygen in my cont water, slime, cont dirt store room. It is quite power hungry though...

I had to do it that way as there was a crash which may be resolved now so you could use less coolers that vent into the same room then have a liquid pump to pump out the liquid oxygen(this used to ctd)

I have made it to around cycle 100 several times, all colonists 100% stressed.

The trick is to never pick violent colonists, then stress just means free water

This sounds good on paper but does not actually work. Pufts die from being chilled by the slime balls. The contaminated oxygen released by slime ball is around 15-16 Celsius. This is too cold for the Pufts. They all perish from being chilled if you do not actively heat up the contaminated oxygen. Many people have asked where their Pufts have gone. This is why.

This is what is know as an exploit though. :)
i let all the aliens run wild i presurized the asteroid to my base ages agoso any gass in it is still potetialy being pupend through my base
Really wish people would stop showcasing screenshots of broken bases that aren't sustainable but rather just aren't 'game ending' yet due to half behaviours and not properly balanced figures, yet insist they're proof of how to actually have a success base that's surviving.

Guys your bases are dead, tainted and over with. Just because it's Alpha and it's not fleshed out enough yet for the game to smack you with a "You gone failed mate" state, doesn't mean you've succeeded. :p
oh should i show you the some of the un farmed contaminated water that i still havent touched

Just face reality.
what cycle you on then
notice how much filteration medium i still have

You're really not getting the gist of what I said are you?
well what does sustainable mean to you
