Sustainable Water Source
I notice that you have to keep digging and get more water sources.

Otherwise you will eventually ran out of oxygen.

I tried building a water pump under water. I couldn't so I was forced to dig a side room put a pump there then open it up to water. It feels awkward having to build in a specific way to pump water out.

How do you deal with this problem?

I get that most resources are "supposed" to be limited but it still feels awkward to me. Especially if your early algae O2 generator consume all of your initial water sources before you get to O2 scrubbler which also need water itself.

I think there can be water geysers on the map. I'm not sure if there is always one on every map though. They provide unlimited water basically. But until you found one you need to use the resources you can find and clean polluted water.

for building pumps in deep water reservoirs; use ladders. U get infinite water from geysers. The issue there is cooling it since they are usually 60+ degrees. U need a hydrogen cooling pipe sys to cool ur reservoir down.

Best when u finish research and are good start looking into slime biomes for gas and water geysers. Also make make a high hydrogen rm to start ur hydrogen cooling sys.

As far I am aware ladder doesn't let your worker go deeper than say 3 or 4 tile depth water.

There are indeed water geysers.
I found one right over an ice biome and had my minions build a ladder straight up into the geysers area so the steam would instantly turn to water and fall straight into the ice biome to cool down.
Worked perfectly forming a nice big pool, 16 tiles deep and wide of near boiling clean water.
Oddly enough ice formed over the top of it so my minions started using it as a shortcut to the geysers.
The trouble with ice over near boiling liquid is that the ice doesn't last long.
So suddenly I got 6 hyperthermia reports and sure enough half my population were stranded on the melting ice sheet.
So I ordered them to build a row of blocks back to the edge of the pool and got a splendid view as all six of them ran to the edge of the ice just as it vanished from beneath them
Half my population got to drown in boiling hot water while suffering from hyperthermia.
And I laughed.

No, you can build ladders directly in water, and go much deeper than three tiles.

Mine is 8 tiles down so u are wrong. As long as the ladder is connected and u have given an order to go down they will. Priority assignment also come into play too

I have a big water issue. My dupes insist on filling the musher with tons of water each day, way more than I ever want to waste on food. Is this a known bug?

They boiled to death. What a horrible way to go. Hope you made some memorials.

Ladders are the best short cut across gaps since they allow water and gases to pass while not using metals like mesh tiles. Only main downside is that it negates the athletic stats of the dupes that cross it since they like to hop across the ladder though this doesn't apply when going up and down the ladders.

Hmm weird. I could swore that they refused to build ladder to reach the pump at the bottom of a lake. So it ending up being "unreachable". So I resorted to dig a room close to the bottom of the lake and drain the lake into this room (with wall that allow gas to pass but not liquid). Which allow my workers to reach the pump if need to. Like this.

ladders take the space, so you need to build it on the side of the pump

I've been having similar issues - atmosphere depletes to such low pressures (because my algae plants consume like 300 water + 300 CO2, but only provide 40 Oxygen), and then I run out of water for the plants / food production. So either we starve or suffocate, and I'm not sure how best to avoid it.

I guess I should be hunting for Steam Geysers then, or at least rushing for that before it becomes like 200g of O2 throughout the base?

U are suppose to use algae deoxidizer not terrariums early stages. The terrariums is for if u made a huge co2 sink to remove co2. That was suppose to last until u figure out where to put air scrubber.

But more or less, after u max research you start digging into slime biome for geysers.

I normally Build my toilets right on the rim of the slime biomes I find so I can Start digging into it after my base is stable.

I learned in order to "win" I have to find a steam Geyser immediately and just move my base to the right or left of it or set up a sort of insane pump system to get the water over to the middle...

You need to have a recycling loop with your polluted water. I'm having no problems at all with water with this setup. Pretty much everything gets recycled, and even the food results in Dupes pooping so that isn't a problem either.
