Again, your colony is meant to be doomed no matter what
What OP meant was this game has no real purpose or objective.
In response for OP:
This game just came out of Alpha entering the state of Early Access like yesterday, even in store page info the dev already point out all future plans of ONI including finding out the lore behind it to make the game feel more alive. But we gotta wait for that up until atleast next year?
You ever played their other games? Namely Don't Starve? It's more or less the same thing, that is survival, seeing how long you can survive, but at the same time they put up lores(some sort of campaign with objectives) within it for us to explore(if we chose to). So I can bet they are approching the same method of how they made DS, slowly adding up more contents in the coming months :)
Who says your colony is meant to be doomed? I don't see the issue in surviving forever with at least a few people. You can grow food plus you can make food simply out of dirt and water which are abundant. Also you can just make fresh water by filtering polluted water and create oxygen by filtering carbon dioxide etc. I'm sure with a small colony it would take forever to even come close of running out of resources and by that time you are self sufficient.
But in any way, even if that's not possible. The fun comes from building your colony and trying to survive as long as possible. Plus the game isn't finished yet, they might add more stuff in the future to be able to be more self sufficient indefinitely. Like in the Long Dark in the beginning you would run out of stuff to eat after only a few days, now you can live pretty much indefinitely. Things might change over the course of Early Access.
also can't let this one drop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw_cdqQHGA8
