Crashes on Startup

Sup,

Few of my mates wanted to start playing again so I reinstalled DoW. I can't play it at all. When I start the game either through Steam or the .exe the game will randomly crash to desktop during the Sega, Relic, DivX or game intro.

I tried using -nomovies in the launch options (as you can't skip them on first play) and this gets me past the loading screen to the menu where you login. I'll be at that screen for a maximum of a second before the game either crashes to desktop or freezes with a sound loop and I have to end task.

I've tried using various options in the graphics config, I've tried windowed mode, I've tried safe mode, I've tried running as admin with all the different compatability modes, I've uninstalled the game and reinstalled four times and nothing is making it work.

Has anyone else experienced this and/or knows a fix? I just want some nostalic games with my buddies lol!

Warhawk, having the same problems as most people in here. Tried the usual stuff and no dice. Error reports state:

@warhawk: nope. that's what i wanted to convey. NO file generated at all.
it seems as though both executables (w40k.exe and w40kwa.exe) do exactly NOTHING.

My Warhammer crashes with error report
W40kWA.exe caused a No Memory in module ntdll.dll at 0023:771edf0f.
When i try to run it through the steam library. I had success using the executables in the Dawn of war Directory after fixing a warning contained in the warning log that there was a missing folder in the engine folder.

Grumpybear can you tell me what the warnings.txt file in the Dawn of War folder is saying, for instince even though i have mine working through launching from the Dawn of War folder in steam apps, i still have a non fatal problem,

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dawn of War Gold contain then.
If your missing everything ive mentioned maybe try a re-install. I know from my warnings that i am missing something that isnt causing it to crash atm.

@Warhawk - i reainstalled the game multiple times, changed languages, even went so far and reinstalled steam itself.

still the game does not create a warnings text. it simply does nothing. neither admin rights nor compatibility settings change that fact. graphicsconfig works normally, i can test the graphics settings and do see that red spacemarine, so i guess the graphics engine is not the problem. it has to be an incompatibility with windows 8.1 update (that dreaded second "service pack") or a mistake with the latest patch which does only cripple SOME users - so some hardware or software incompatibility or a missing file or wrong setting internal to the game, i guess.

but without info from a developer i fear there is nothing more i (or you) can do to remedy the situation.

Has there been any update for this? I purchased all 4 DoW games and every single one crashes at the Relic Intro. I'm running win7 with an NVidia card. I was able to play it years ago when I had a physical copy on the same rig

Edit: Dark Crusade and Soulstorm started working... No luck with Winter Assault or DoW, though.

I have an nvidia card, with intel and windows 7.

My brother also got the games and all of them worked for him no trouble. He has windows 7 with Radeon and an intel chip. Both are 64 bit os.

I transfered his copies of SoulStorm and Dark Crusade over and at least Soul Strom works.
I still have to launch gold edition and winter assault from the in folder exe. I have not tried Dark Crusade

If its not to much trouble can you post your folder contents, you might be missing something. When you verify cache does it say if you are missing files?

And what exactly does the do nothing do, does it bring up a splash screen or anything. Does steam say your in game when you launch it?

on verify local files it says 1 files will be downloaded - but the download stays with 0 bytes - so it does not download and the problem persists. this happens for both goty and winter assault on windows 8.1 update. at least for me it does.

as i repeatedly said: it does absolutely nothing. of course, if i try to start it via steam instead of the .exe directly, steam pops up this little "game is starting" windows, but that closes after a second or two and then nothing. steam registers me as having last played the game today, but as far as i can see it does not say i'm still playing - where should i look for that info?

dark crusade works fine for me (only german, because i live in germany), but apart from that it runs fine (just played a few hours). so does soulstorm and all parts of dow2... and space marine. and space hulk for that matter. but apart from dc and soulstorm working, but goty and wa not, this should not in any way be related, the others being completely different games and such.

I've been trying to run it on W7 and Nvidia GF GT 640M (laptop) and it crashes on intro. When I'm verifing cache it says that I'm missing one file, then steam downloads file (sometimes is 1,1kb other 1,4kb), and it does not help at all. I've already applyed question to Steam support about this issue here, but they send me back to developers, so they have no clue what is going on. In my opinion ther is some problem with downloading via steam client, so it does not dowloads ALL files.

EDIT: I've notice that game does not use my graphic card (nVidia) but Intel HD 4000 chipset...

To add to the "doesn't start at all" group...
I bought all 4 as part of the recent deal, hadn't had a chance to play until now.
Dark Crusade and Soulstorm both start fine. DoW - Gold and Winter Assault both don't start at all. If I run them over and over from explorer I can occasionally see them in Task Manager but they persist for fractions of a second.

@rrobcioo i guess your problem is more in the line of hardware / a bios / a windows setting. you should be fine the moment you get the game to use your nvidia card. maybe a driver setting in windows? the nvidia card should be the primary device. also, maybe you can try disabling the hd4000 device (i guess the chip is in your cpu?).

seems to me that graphics card are not the problem, as i use a radeon 7970... but we both use windows 8.1 - so it seems the problem is there somewhere.
