I found that using cabins as walls, facing towards center, creates the best starting base. I equip everyone with bows and that allows me to defend by spraying and praying.

However, I wonder whether this is viable in the longer run, I have not yet encountered scaling problems, but I assume I will need more space.

Also, there is a problem that it takes long amount of time to get to some resources, but i have not found any "gate" structure that would allow me to move while blocking enemy movement.

I do very similar to you, I place the spikes a little further out and stack sandbags as cover for archers. I also keep a couple good melee fighters in base in case the enemy breaks thru and hand to hand defense is needed to protect my archers. Also creating a gauntlet of spikes that force the enemy into single file seem to work well. They're usually easy to deal with in early base mode, doesn't really seem necessary at that point, so I don't do so much that I have to tear down and rebuild as base expands, just let them take them out without much defense, and by the time the stronger attacks come my defenses are pretty intact. I also like to gather the furthest resources first, before enemy sends a real force. Seems to work well for me.
