The theme aside, you have to send out teams to scavenge ruins and rescue captured survivors. There are other survivor groups you can meet and trade with, but there's an ever present threat of demons coming to attack your base while you're gone. There's a mechanic where the attacks get more dangerous as the game progresses, but you can research ways to counter that. Raids in this game aren't nearly as random as in Rimworld, and your focus is on fighting against the demons, not other humans.
Another difference is that there's an actual main story to follow. You can continue playing your colony after the story is finished though.
I have over 400 hours in rimworld and it is one of my favorite games, but I have been binging this game lately. The optimization problem is very different when it comes to combat, so the variety of tactics is wider and broader than rimworld, as well as scavenging from the surrounding area is much more important.
There is a priority system that is somewhat similar to rimworld and you can manually or automatically assign tasks to your survivors. The map you build on appears small and the resources appear limited when coming from rimworld, but that is not the case. Some resources take time to access, others can be grown, and everything can be found on the world if you venture out.
If you enjoy survival games, I recommend this one even without the concept based on the simplicity yet depth of the gameplay.
Cons can be the tactical combat. That has a learning curve and is a bit unforgiving when you get to certain teirs and it makes a large number of people complain about imbalance. Melee also falls off of viability in a certain point of the game and takes a lot of effort to make work at end game.
Personally, I love the concept too. even if the game did not have solid gameplay elements, I think I would enjoy it for the 30 or so hours I had put into it for my first playthrough. I think this concept has a huge amount of space to grow and be expanded, and I hope the developers can make a lot of money on it so they can afford to support the game into the future
