If it still feels a bit too tough, you can always focus on your economy, get some items that you can sell, and then buy some tier 2 equipment from a trader, which will make it even easier to get those research materials.
Last, don't forget your survivors and their skills. Matching your equipment to your survivor skills, and having higher level survivors with combat skills can make a huge difference.
If you're still having a hard time, don't hesitate to join our discord, a lot of veterans there with tips and us devs are active too.

As the game hints suggest levelling up gathering (and hopefully having a trait for improved scavenging speeds) means you can sneak in, loot the nearest container, and sneak out whilst taking minimal to no damage.
This isn't the most reliable tactic and you will often find yourself pausing to retreat and repeating the map for an easier layout / patrol path.
Edited: Forgot to add. When you're in the encounter, scout there as well. You can frequently single out enemies, or take two at a time, by observing how they patrol and wander. Be patient and try to only engage 1 or 2 at a time.
