Steam Controller not working with Rogue Squadron
I set up a custom config but the game just ignores it. Any idea what's going on? I mapped the controller to keyboard controls with gyroscope for flight controls.

Try going to the settings before you launch the game > joystick (it should all be blank) > click on defualt on the right side, and it should fill in all the blanks. That fixed it for me.

Rogue Squadron is a DirectInput game. Steam controller only supports Xinput. You will have to map the mouse and keyboard to it instead.

I tried setting up the steam controller to just emulate the keyboard controls used by the game, not using Xinput. The problem is it's not switching to that when I start the game, so I'm still stuck in the desktop controller scheme. Is there any way to force it to switch to my custom config?

I found a work around. Since the game reverts to the desktop controls, I just changed the desktop controls themselves to the settings I wanted. It totally blows, and requires restarting the game just to tweak, but it works. Now I just wish I had Yaw/Rudder control, and I'd be set. Totally sucks relying entirely on pitch + roll + break to hit my targets.

Yeah, this is really f.. annoying, they should really update the game to work properly with their own controller...

Have any of you tried xbox 360 controllers?

Did anyone ever figure out a solution for this? I was really looking forward to playing this through my Steam Link in my living room. I have the controller configured, but once I get past the launcher the Controller switches from the configuration I set up for the game to the desktop config instead. Really infuriating. If there were some way to skip the launcher I bet it would work.

I've been poking at this for a bit today because I agree that the launcher is the issue. sadly standard tricks to get it around the launcher dont work (it is from 1999), so It might need someone a bit more clever to find a workaround. supposedly the GoG version of the game did skip the launcher so I might try looking into how that was done. If any one figures it out before I do I'd love to hear it.

The game plays fantastically on my logitech X30, I'd just love to use my steam controller if I could.

I found a solution for this for anyone that wants to get it to work. The keyboard and mouse controls are crippled because the game defaults to joystick controls. You can correct this in game by using CTRL-J which disables the joystick and also allows you to turn with the keyboard or mouse. I would not recommend using the mouse however because it seems to have an issue where it hangs on a command making it almost impossible to use.

It appears that this setting is always on regardless of if you actually use a joystick. I went into the launcher joystick settings and deliberately saved it with no connected joysticks, and it still defaults to on in-game.

I uploaded my Steam Controller profile for anyone that wants to use it. The Right Grip is the enter key which you can use to skip past the launcher into the game. You can also use it in game for the menus. The Left Grip sends the CTRL-J combo to disable the joystick during game. I think you only have to do this once per session. The analog stick just maps to the cursor keys.

Unfortunately the trick to use the profile was mentioned above by adding it as a Desktop profile. You can import the profile, and save it as a personal profile. Then go to your Desktop profile, and import it from "Your Other Games". Just remember to switch back when you are done playing Rogue Squadron.

I can tell you that this seems to work just as good as the 360 controller. The only reason I ended up doing all of this work is because I needed to run the game in compatibility mode for 3d vision which breaks the controller input. Now I can play this game as it was never intended!

Hey there, I just wanted to thank you for your work! I am now able to use my steam controller for RS 3D and I'm LOVING it more than I ever have. I got the game on release but never had a joystick to play it with. The Steam Controller is my first ever controller (besides owning a few consoles; Ps1, Ps2, GameCube) and so far I've managed 6 gold medals out of 6 missions (with some retries, naturally).

so thank you SO much for making it possible for me to play a gem like this game. Always loved it, never finished it and most certainly NOT with gold medals of any kind. Cheers!

So, the controller is recognized by Steam, the controller works on every other game. I open the game, press "Hardware Configuration" go to "Joystick Options" and the list of "Game Controller" is blank. I press "Calibrate Joystick" follow the instructions, calibrate it, confirm that the game understands that it's a controller and that it works... And then when i press OK, the contoller doesn't show up in the Game Controller menu. Nothing i do can get my controller to appear in the menu. Tried reinstalling the game, tried using the system analysis, tried using the in game menu, tried the CTRL+J trick, tried manually typing the game controller into the blank bar, absolutely nothing i do can convince the game that my controller exists.

That's right, the game is too old.

Use the "fix" described by mistermorcus and it will work :)
