I would say that Taste of Adventure is well worth having. Lots of additional content. With B&B on sale @40% off, I am considering, at this late stage, adding it now. I am not bothered by the sound track as I play with all sound muted by choice.
Of course, if you buy without DLC you will be missing a lot of content. T of A adds a substantial sequence of additional, and more challenging scenarios. However, the game is perfectly playable without any DLC, and it is a lot of fun. (There appears to be a lot less content in B & B than in T of A, which is why I did not buy it at full price)
I still take part in the monthly competition most months and, for those, I normally (but not invariably) disable all but the base content so that my creations are OK for all players.
