Yes, it's using Metal (to bring the graphics up to par with the Windows/Linux versions). The main problem is that some Macs apparently are still using an older macOS version with very early Metal drivers that tend to crash a lot :/
We might simply try to make this the default version soon and see how many Mac error reports we get.
macOS Catalina 10.15.3
MacBook Pro 16" (2019)
16GB 2667 MHz DDR4
AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4GB
Tested on MBP 16"
When playing the newest version, the FPS was super low so I lowered the resolution and turned off temporal anti aliasing and even went in window mode and the game would crash after a few minutes in the first campaign scenario.
For the experimental version, the game will not make it past the logo loading screen before crashing.
Specs are:
2016 MBP 13"
MacOS Sierra 10.12.6
2.9 GHz Intel Core i5
16GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536MB
Any help would be appreciated in regards to whether I should update to a different OS or what settings I could use.
(The latest experimental version isn't labeled "Experimental" in-game, but it's still supposed to have all of the visual upgrades)
