The first real campaign level after the tutorial is a very easy landscape with plenty of money to experiment with and some easy goals. If you're still struggling after that or have some specific questions please post an update, maybe there's something we can improve :)

He's playing the campaign and I'd suggest to do that as well. It's a bit overwhelming if you start playing sandbox mode right from the start I think. Just look how he is building a few coasters, shops, decoration. Then you probably get the idea on how to start.
If you put down a few rides and do nothing else then at some point in the future you'll get guest complaints about being hungry/thirsty, the paths being dirty, the shops being out of stock, rides breaking down, staff lacking a staffroom, no toilets, no access to rides or vandals in the park.
Just put down a couple of rides, watch the people wander about your park, enjoy the scenery and wait for problems to pop up. You don't have to preemptively solve the problems in the first few scenarios.
go on youtube and look at other parks and coasters, start small by copying aspects you like and putting them together little by little.
this process will help you develop creativity and understand the menus more little by little.
apply this process to anything new and overwhelming in any way, and you will eventually learn to be more creative and bold in your own concepts.
