This whole post could be summed up in this sentence: "We thought we could milk the loyal RuneScape community for some quick cash, but we couldn't, so we'll find another community to milk now."
"new players weren't sticking around to finish the stories and quests that we'd already created, let alone justify us creating additional content."
Really? It's the hope of new content that keeps new players sticking around. RuneScape players are used to a new update every week, and if that doesn't happen, they get the reason for it. They are used to seeing the concept for future updates and none of that was visible here. Why would a new player stick around when they see that the last update, nay, the last time the development team posted on any social media, was months ago? Especially with the last post being about a development team member and not about the game? This clearly showed that you care about yourself more than you care about the game and its players.
RuneScape was clearly a passion project by the Gower brothers. Most other idle games are passion projects by small development teams and very often a single passionate person. It is easy to feel that passion for making a game worth playing in those other games, but the players definitely did not feel it here. Individuals have made more fleshed out idle games out of boredom and passion than you could with a "small" development team, and they had to come up with an idea for their game on their own, while you had the whole world and lore of RuneScape at yoru disposal.
The game was clearly a cash grab more than anything else. A pay-to-progress-faster feature was added way too quickly. How do you expect players to trust your good intentions, when the shop in the game is finished before we could even check our statistics (a basic feature in most other idle games)?
You somewhat try to blame the players for the game's failure in this post, saying that new players didn't want to stick around and that the changes implemented from players feedback weren't good enough (in a way implying that the community did not have good ideas). The only one here that is to blame is you. You set off on a mission for cash instead of a mission for player satisfaction and it failed.
And you have the guts to title the post "New Beginnings and New Projects"? You've disappointed quite a large community, that will probably make sure to stay away from those new projects in the future. But I guess you won't have a hard time finding a new community to milk for some quick buck before moving on...
"Mission failed, we'll get them next time." Right?
Most of my skills are 120s, if you're shutting down, can I have a ton of shards to surge the rest to 120?
