Is this better than Yooka-Laylee?
I've been playing this game for a bit now and am enjoying it quite a bit. Haven't bought Yooka-Laylee yet, because I know the voice acting would bug the life out of me, but gameplay-wise, which is better?

Hmm, I'd say it depends on what you like better.

Banjo-Kazooie or Jak and Daxter 1.

Yooka-Laylee has more content and gameplay variation, but a portion of that content is unpolished to a very negative degree. I would still say that, ignoring the few annoying minigames in Yooka, it still has more going on than Skylar does. It's also worth noting that they are very different in the basic design of the game: Yooka-Laylee features hub worlds with challenges to earn collectibles scattered all over the place in every which direction. Skylar & Plux features mostly linear levels with occasional off-the-beaten-path locations with a collectible. IIf you like a linear experience, Skylar will be more suited to your tastes, but if you want freedom as a player to go where you want when you want, Yooka is better suited.

... but all that said, assuming you'd like both games, Skylar is MUCH more bang for your dollar given its current $10 asking price compared to Yooka's $40. It's a longer and more feature-rich game, but the difference isn't quadruple price big.

Yooka-Laylee is meant to be a throwback to the N64 era of 3D platformers (Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario 64, etc.) while this game is meant more to be a throwback to the PS2 era of 3D Platformers (Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, etc.) So as Cat Catz said, whether or not you'll like this one or Yooka-Laylee better depends entirely on which style you prefer and/or grew up on.

Wait until the Yooka-Laylee Patch, and then purchase it. :)

In the sense that of course Yooka-Laylee will be better, but you must temper your expectations with games like this if you rush in expecting this to be Jak and Daxter 1 or Ratchet and Clank it will remind you of them, but that's it.

The game is good, and there is a ton of potential, but making comparsion to Yooka-Laylee or Ratchet and Clank vs Jak and Daxter is like asking is X Player better than Y Player in sports(i.e Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Football) when X player is the rookie vs Y Player being a legend.
But some rookies are better... That and Yooka-Laylee isn't a legendary game. Just because it's made by legendary devs, doesn't mean it's automatically the better game. Nor are assassins creed or call of duty the best games in their genres. It's all a matter of opinion. I haven't played any Nintendo games or Jak and Daxter, and I only played the Ratchet remake on PS4. Ratchet is definitely better than this and Yooka-Laylee. I was just wanting opinions on this vs YL.

yes, but what it does include is someone with exp in making games (bugs, some design issues etc).
Although compared to some of how this did compared to Yooka-Laylee do seem a bit better.

Like enemies actually have a "role" in this one (still not a major one at least more of).
And including less clutter in level design and collectables.
A lot about Yooka-Laylee does seem strange, from its mini-games etc.

It has more content, but with these dev's here I would have more faith in their next game in this genre.
Although I might be a bit harsh on any dev's, I do hope they can succeed since the market isn't easy or to make people happy.
Really when projects like these are maybe a bit big for "fresh" developers and a small budget.
Pros and cons seem to be 50-50, really. I understand what you're saying though, it makes sense.
No

I'm not going to knock this game because it's a very polished try
but like many other games it was made by a small team of newbie devs trying to reinvent something a lot more sophisticated.

It takes from Jak & Daxter but there is much much more going on in the first J&D.

If you buy Yooka Laylee you're buying a full-featured game
If you buy this you're supporting someone who will one day help to make full-featured games.

Nowadays it's terribly hard to rate devs who aren't an established company because you don't want to discourage them - especially if a small team of 15 to 25 years olds and their title looks like a lot of effort went into it

Understandable. Solid post! It is hard to rate, but I'd say the response to this game has been rather encouraging for them
For me both games are simular and very different at the same time. It's like comparing Mortal Kombat with Streetfighter, I love them both for different reasons.

I'll break it down to a list of criteria:

Graphics: Yooka-Laylee - 8/10 | Skylar & Plux - 6/10

Story/Script/Dialogue: Y-L - 6/10 | S & P - 2/10

General gameplay, gameplay variation and Level Design: Y-L - 8/10 | S & P - 6/10

Controls: Y-L - 8/10 | S & P - 6/10

Game duration: Y-L - 9/10 | S & P - 4/10

Overall: Y-L - 7.8/10 | S & P - 4.8/10

However you have to take into account that S&P is an Indie Game and Y-L is a full feature game with a much bigger dev team and more money.
