Media Foundation HEVC video (a.k.a. H.265):
Media Foundation offers a wide selection of codec support out of the box but there are some codecs that aren't support without downloading and installing them.

Here is a page that provides an explanation and links to these external downloads including the HEVC codecs.

HEVC video extension works in a mysterious way. I recently upgraded my video card to a RTX3090, and the hardware decoding stopped working. It took me a long time to find out that I should have used Nvidia's Studio Driver, not Game Ready Driver, in order for the HEVC hardware decoding to work.
Also if you accidentally install the x86 version of HEVC extension, Whirligig and other VR player's Media Foundation will stop working. You need to uninstall the x86 version before you can install the 64bit version.
1. Run powershell and type in:
Get-AppxPackage | select PackageFullName,NonRemovable
2. You will see all the AppX listed, including the HEVC Video Extension, like
Microsoft.HEVCVideoExtension_2.0.51121.0_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
To remove it, type in:
Remove-AppxPackage Microsoft.HEVCVideoExtension_2.0.51121.0_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
3. Now you can install the 64bit of HEVC video extension.

Dear users, please write if you have problems with videos in 8192x4096 resolution? In my case, they are very stuttering, which is impossible to watch, but videos with 7680x3840 play great.
