Solution to common playback problems due to codecs
If you're having lagging audio, stuttering video, or no video at all, or "Whirligig can't open this file", make sure to install LAV codecs, then set Whirligig to use DirectShow and use this tool: "Preferred Filter Tweaker" aka "Win7DSFilterTweaker".

It can be downloaded here: https://www.videohelp.com/software/Preferred-Filter-Tweaker

Then, open it up and click the "Preferred decoders" button. It will open a list of formats, and for each format, you can select which codec is being used.

Make sure for each format the check box is checked, and that each one has LAV selected. For me, only WMV1/2/3 are Microsoft (I don't have alternate codecs installed. VR video doesn't use those codecs anyways).

Make sure to do the same thing for both 32-bit and 64-bit codecs.

Here's a link how to install LAV codecs if you don't know how: https://steamcommunity.com/app/451650/discussions/0/364042262873027118/

Phil please pin this post as it solves a lot of issues.

In fact if Whirligig can't open a file, it should display information that tells people to install LAV, use DirectShow in Whirligig, and use this tool to select LAV for all formats.

Hi Cheater00

Thanks for these instructions. I've pinned it to help others.

As a lot of us are now in lockdown maybe I'll get a chance to do an accompanying video to go along with it.

With any luck it will also help me catch up with a lot of things. Although I have to say that I'm, like many others are finding it hard to work with the bombardment of info that's happening. Hopefully that'll all calm down and people will start to be able to work again, if only from the living rooms like me :)

It says it is a tweaker for Windows 7 and Windows 8. is It needed for Windows 10?

Yes, it is also needed for Windows 10.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Why can't we just get Media Foundation to work the way it did before 1903 windows update?
Whirligig  [developer] May 2, 2020 @ 1:56pm
Sadly I don't have any way of doing that. I can only hope that they fix it themselves. This is one of the reasons I've included other ways of playing back videos so at least if Windows decides to break Media Foundation we still have other options.

I'm working on the Video Lan now and I think I've managed to improve performance so it might be work a try after I update that.

The part that breaks is not part of Whirligig, it's in the Windows subsystems related to decoding video.

well fine, it would be all great and I could move to Direct Show but I followed your instructions. I installed Lav Codec pack, and then I installed Filter Tweaker using your link and set all the 32/64 settings to use Lav and 5k/6k 180 vids are still skipping and stuttering.

and lower super sampling had no effect.

But the videos using Lav codec stutter. Only 4k runs okay. The VideoLan video path option the image is just frozen, you can hear sound but the image is just frozen on all videos.
