I have never seen a message like you describe. Have you tried fiddling with the worker assignment selectors after reloading a game?
Well i haven't tried hiring a worker sense the last update because I didn't see anything in the update news for the last update that indicated you could now hire a worker when you had one claim and have them work on that claim, didn't want to waste the money just to find out I can't use them again because I have only one claim.
Correct that is what I experienced, I have one claim, I hired a worker because I kept getting a message that people wanted to work for me. Upon doing so I tried to put them to work and I got a message I couldn't use them because I only have one claim, Has this changed on last update because I don't remember seeing it in the update news. So i spent the money to hire them, couldn't use them, paid them and then had to fire them.
They can do various jobs and make the work a little easier and you make more money in the long run.
It's older and the overseer was added meanwhile, also the workers gain 1% experience each day.
