Panning not allowed, Can't progress/ stuck

I had no problems yesterday, but today I can't pour Hog Pan Mat dirt from my bucket into the Gold Pan for some reason. It tells me "You have to pour the dirt into the other machine". But I have no other machine!
It does allow me to pour it back into the Hog Pan, so I did. I pored some water over and cleaned the 3% mats in a bucket to try again, but the game still says I have to pour it into another machine.
I'm at T1, start of the game!

You can quit the tutorial. It's better to read the ingame manual ("Journal") instead of playing in tutorial mode.

That was it. I wanted to get a bit extra gold so that I could benefit from the first gold smelting being free in the tutorial. I guess the game wouldn't allow that. I suspect it had something to do with the game passing over to day 2. That's the only thing I can think of that changed before I couldn't use the Gold Pan.

sounds like you may have started in easy mode if so then the settings are different than normal mode

It's normal mode. The settings has been left unchanged. I just chose to reject the Nugget at the start. It's nearly identical to Veteran in settings, but it allows me to change them later if I want to.

*It was the tutorial I had to end to fix this.*
2 clicks in the pause menu and it was fixed. If I loaded a save that was still on day 1 on the same character and step in the tutorial, it still allowed me to do normal gold panning to pick out gold from the dirt, but I suspect something broke when it went to Day 2.
This of course would probably not happen if I wasn't in the tutorial, and it's fixed now.
Though it worked to end the tutorial, I went for smelting the gold and selling the bar before continuing. This also allowed me to progress like normal. Me stubbornly ignoring the tutorial just softlocked the game a bit for me. It's fine now, but now i know that if I encounter another issue like this, then ending the tutorial might be best.
