Hi there. Good Decision to use a Ctrl. If u use Win 10 OS. X-Box One Ctrl. works fine. In Mainmenu go to Options >> Settings >> Controls

For myself: I use X-Box One Ctrl. @ Win 10 and it works great.
If this won´t work go to Client Options >> Settings >> Controller.
Think there is a software on steam called controller companion or something if the game does not support your controller out of the box.
Helped a friend once a few years ago. Software like this does not work very well in most games. Get xbox controller, or a controller supported by the game you play. Most support xbox

It shold be plug and play but i've always had to go into my device settings on the control panel and manually select the driver...this is a common problem but there are videos on how to do it...
