(I don't really play Take and Hold, so I'm basing this on my limited playtime and the things I've heard on the forums.)
The legacy one doesn't have the character selection.
In the current T&H on the options panel to your left it'll have the sets of characters you can pick from.
This is on the main game now, you don't need to be on an alpha branch to use it.
From the main hub when you first start the game, you need to load the "take and hold" scene. Once you are loaded in to that scene you will see a few big blue panels in front of you, along with a hot dog on a pedestal. On the far left panel is where you can change what "character" you play as. There are a couple different categories of character you can explore but I believe Ricky Random is in the "daring defaults" category. So select "daring defaults" and then select "ricky dicky random". You should see a picture of Ricky pop up on that left panel with a short written description of the character.
Then look at the next panel to the right, and set up the game options to your liking. Once you are ready to play, grab the hot dog and eat it.
Now you will start out with a random firearm, and when you spend points at the supply drops they will all be random firearms too. The random guns use a pistol icon but they are not just pistols, it's all the guns in the game. You will see a flag icon that you can spend points on too. That is a random accessory. That could be anything from a rail adapter, to a scope, to a suppressor, or any of the accessories.
