Overload not starting up anymore
Hello,

my copy of the game doesn't seem to startup anymore since the newest semi-update 8.5 (Build 104) rolled out, even though I played the game without any problems two days ago.

The only changes which happen to my PC during this time are these things:

  • Build 104 - Semi-update 8.5 of Overload rolled out through Steam.

  • My copy of Windows 10 received several new updates:

  • 2 Updates for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4041994 and KB4058043)

  • 2018-1 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056892)

  • and lastly - the functional update 1709 for Windows 10.

All installed today.

I have no clue why my copy of the game shouldn't work anymore. If there is an option to send debug information which I excluded, please tell me where to find it so I can possibly provide it.

As for the general procedure which happens while starting up the game:

I start the game through Steam, checking option to "Start Overload".

Icon appears in Taskbar.

Overload.exe appears in Task-Manager.

Process acquires some space of my RAM. CPU and GPU are used in medium capacity at this point.

Overload.exe acquires around 400MB of RAM until the number completely stops at a very specific number, which seems to be different everytime I start the game.

After about two more minutes, CPU and GPU return to 0% busy.

No game appears on my display despite playing on fullscreen. Clicking the game icon does nothing.

I am at the end of my wits.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I'm currently in the process of redownloading the game in hope of that helping.

Huh. I wonder if the window somehow got 'lost'. If the redownload doesn't help, try these two things...

1. With the game as the selected program, mess around a bit with the Windows key & the arrow keys (possibly throwing shift in there as well).
[Shift]+{Windows]+[Left Arrow] will move the window to the left display (or will circle around if it's already on the left-most display).
[Windows]+[Up Arrow] should take up the whole screen of whatever display you're on.
[Windows]+[Left Arrow] should take up the left half of whatever display you're on.
With any of these, if the game is just trying to render somewhere it shouldn't be (like on a non-existent extra monitor), these could help snap it back.

2. If that doesn't help, try clearing out your game settings. Either run the blackscreen fix (bottom option when launching the game through Steam, or go to:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Revival\

and delete the Overload folder (feel free to back it up first if you have any saves/scores that you care about).

Hopefully one of those will knock it loose for you.

Thank you for the quick answer.

Yes, your suggestions helped me at least a little bit.

So the game apparently boots up, I just wasn't noticing. When I exit fullscreen (Alt+ Enter, which I always start in), the game window is actually there. Problem is though, that the window remains black.

I backed up my files and deleted the %appdata%/.../Overload folder as you suggested. That helped bringing back the menu music. I can still move the mouse around and highlight menu options (I hear the mouseover sfx and even managed to exit the game without seeing anything), yet the window remains completely black.

The game is also much quicker to boot. Two days ago (and all other instances I booted the game via Steam) it took about 30 seconds for the main menu to appear. Now I hit play and the menu is there in about 5 seconds, but I have zero visuals.

Edit: I just did a steam install validation check. It said one file was missing that would be reacquired. Now the game takes a bit longer to boot.

I just had a brainwave because I'm good at guessing and I was right.

I thought that maybe something is causing to interfere with any game running on Unity and I was correct. I started another game which is built on Unity and I have the exact same issue.

So that's most likely a render problem and not because of your game. That's making it a whole lot more complicated. Thanks for your help so far.

I even know the concrete problem which I have with Unity now - this is a screenshot from the usual Unity launching configuration menu.

I have no monitors to display.[i.imgur.com]

For anyone else who is experiencing this, I just found an article containing the problem:

Search help here.

Well that's screwy. Glad you got it working, though. And thanks for the follow-up to help anyone else that might hit this :).
