Black Mages

Maybe I'm missing something, but I feel the black mage in this is completely useless. In the first game, my black mage was quite the powerhouse. But in this one, even with his INT at 400, he's doing next to no damage on anything, regardless of what spell I cast. Only use for him I've found has been to cast his paralysis spell on the enemies. Is there a trick I'm missing to get his spells to do a decent amount of damage on this?

I had problems with my BLM in the 1. game will i realised i had to:
1. buff him with genius, items e.g. AND debuff the enemys MDEF.

At the end of LD my BLM had over 700 int and with buffs even more and he could crit for over 50k dmg ST, which was rly nice i guess ^^

I did not play him here yet, but i bet he can be devastating here too.
