"Vehicle: No End Year" mod
Is anyone aware of a mod that functions like this mod but only affects vehicles the player can buy rather than also affecting the personal vehicles that the people use like this mod does? I really like this mod but at the same time it annoys me that there are still cars driving around from the early 1900s in the year 2000. They are such slow cars and hold up the rest of traffic.

Or alternatively is someone aware of how I could alter the mod to make it function this way?

You can edit the mod .mdl file which is usually located for example res/models/vehicle/train/model. Search line yearTo, and replace the end year with 0

I assume it'd be possible to restrict the the end year to trains, trucks and wagon only. I'm not good understanding how Lua works so I cannot say for certain though. Editing the mod does the trick anyways, but if the mod gets update it also will change the yearTo line back to original.

Should be be easy to do, crazy busy at work right now but if you can wait until weekend and no one beats me to it I will create such a mod.

I would appreciate that Dirkels. In the mean time I will have a look at the files and see what I can figure out.

Had a look in the 'Vehicle: No end year" mod and it is not changing the end year of the people cars. However the first cars have an end year of 1963. Might that be why you see them longer than expected?

The only mod I am using is this mod. Here is an example in the year 2000: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1483393478
They are actually less common now than what I had thought. So that is a bit of a relief to know. However it only takes one traveling to another town to cause a tie up like in the picture. Also, do the cars that do only 70kph also have an end year normally? They too cause traffic back ups, albeit not as bad.

This is my sort of educated guess which I base on the fact that I have 8 modern car models running on my modern maps and there are no old cars. It may be that because you run no other mods that the game has only the stock cars to chose from. If you download some modern cars and run them on your map all those old cars may eventually get replaced with modern cars.

For reference, the availability years of vanilla cars are:
* avant: <=1963
* ford_fordor: <=1963
* beetle: 1948-1985
* trabant: 1958-1990
* corolla: >=1977
* pickup (USA): >=1978
* opel_limo: >=1995

After doing a test it seems to me no new ford_fordor or avants might be spawning but the sims already owning one will keep using them until 2000 or later. Now testing if setting a lifespan for cars works.

Maybe this is a solution, speeding up the slower cars:

Thanks for looking into it Dirkels. If what you say is true then it would seem it is not tied to the use of the mod. In which case I am not very bothered by it since it is supposedly normal game behavior. It hadn't occured to me that the people would have a specific vehicle tied to their existence. I assumed the moment they spawn a vehicle to travel it would choose a vehicle from whatever the present selection of vehicles was at the time rather than always choosing the same vehicle every time.

If this is true it has some other implications as well. It might suggest that the game does not simply add new people to the simulation over time, but also removes people as well. Alternatively it might suggest that the vehicle used could be tied not to the person but perhaps to the building the person lives in.

From what I observed a person keeps using the same car (modle and color stays the same) in general but it does happen they switch to a different car. They do switch work and job destination often (when old destination upgrades?) and maybe when they do both destinations walking and than switch back to car they get a different one.

Anyway the "Vehicle: No end year" does not change the end year of cars and setting lifespan on cars had no effect. But be great if cars would have a lifespan (either set in model or a fixed 5 years?) after which the sim has to get a new car from the pool available at that time.
