How do trams work?

Hey, I'm new to this game. I was trying to establish a tram network in the game. I've build the depot and bought a tram. I tried linking all residential areas in a city with tramlines and bus stops. I tried linking two cities as well. All bus stops are in the residential areas. But nobody wants to get on my tram :(
What am I doing wrong?

you said it, all stops are in the residental area. Where do you think are people going?

Oookaay, I did think about it. But I haven't seen any signs which indicate where they are needed. Should I link them to industrial and commercial areas?

yes. Or rather use them as feeder for train stations.

People do not have preset destinations in mind. You give them connections, some may be inclined to "switch" targets. This continuously occurs in game, as new buildings are generated.

Yes, lines need to connect residential with commercial and/or industrial zones. That applies to all transit lines, not only trams.

That being said, the preference is for out of bound travel - i.e. intercity trips - so while they can be successfully used on their own on cities without train or air lines, they are most easily and best used as feeders to out of town train or air lines.
