I have two engines on a long fuel line, it's a busy line and two trains half the length was ultimately less efficient.
Also two other questions.
Is there a way to make it where the trains from the start are always available no matter what year it is?
Also if a train is longer then the platform will it still load unload the whole train?
Trains longer than the platform will load and onload just fine. Make sure any switch needed is beyond the end of the train though.
- the traction force is doubled
- the max velocity is the same
=> the power is doubled
- the mass increases a little bit
=> the acceleration is NOT doubled, but nearly (because of the added mass). If it's a long train this has only a little effect so you can say the acceleration is nearly doubled (a bit less).
So adding a locomotive can make sense if the loco is not strong enough or accelerates too slow. I find it better than making 2 trains because so you can work with single track and easier signaling and dont get too much traffic. In my current game I have only 1 train per line because it's more simple. But the trains have to be longer, maybe then I need to make the cargo stations longer (current: mostly 320m) or "cheat" with the trick that you just make the train longer and have long enough track to make sure it can still turn.
To see what kind of effect adding an additional locomotive will have, just compare an existing train with one you configure in the depot. If you don't have the money to buy one, just load the save with the No Costs Mod enabled, and then disable the mod when you're done, so you can do some comparisons.
