[Diesel] Pro: Great traction, Great freight capability, Pretty decent passenger, nice sounding models (mods/in-game), look good with double headers/push-pull. Con: Slow

[Electric] Pro: Excelent HST capability, Fast, Some pretty cool looking models (mods/in-game). Con : Expensive AF (Train itself + track upgrades) , early models have poor traction compared to steam and diesel, dont look as good with double headers/push-pull

Imho

As far as the game is concerned, they are the same. A 100 ton 60 mph diesel with 2,000 horsepower is the same as a 100 ton 60mph electric with 2,000 horsepower. There are mods that allow you to differentiate the pricing between them though, which makes the choice more interesting.

I really like diesels for no particular reason. I just prefer not to have catanary in my kingdoms^^
So I go for diesel and busses.

for freight trains past 70s always diesels after steam, dont waste your time electrifying freight lines most of the time either slowing down or not enough traction. ( thats how i see it ) also lots of great mods for freight diesels

for passenger going electric around 1960- 70s as you likely have most of your passenger lines up and running and possibly have set up electricication and high speed rail and hopefully got your lines flat ish as possible.

I live in California and we just don't see electric trains here, except possibly in the subways of LA and SF. Most American trains, except for the East Coast, are not electrified, so electric trains just don't register with me. I have used them for passenger-only and they work pretty well, especially the speed, but I've never used them for freight and probably never will.

For me, it depand on the situation at hand. I mostly play USA map, so heavy puller diesels ( higher the HP ) to carry heavy loaded and long cargo trains. As for passagers, Electric for commuter lines ( in high population area ) and in small towns, I prefer the bus or the Diesel Budd.
