Effectively transporting from farm to food factory
One of the biggest issue when transporting grain+livestock from a farm to a food factory is that the line gets overwhelmed by one of the two products.

To counteract that buidl 2 separate lines, each with dedicated vehicles. Like a 2 track train station, each with 2 lines, 2 trains dedicated for each cargo.

Sometimes the industry will favour one or the other, but this will recover much easier.

I'd say ignore grain for food production. Find a farm that's close to a city and that has a food factory not too far away. Move livestock from the farm to the food factory and then food back to the farm. Livestock and food use the same type of cars. Then transport the food by trucks from the farm station to the city. This way your train will have something to transport both ways. You can't do that with grain since grain and food use different types of cars.

Very interesting and economical :)

It works great with crude oil and fuel too since these two use the same car type as well. livestock+food and crude+fuel are the only 2 combinations of products from raw resource to final good that use the same cars. These 2 and passengers are great for early game, especally on hard difficulty, because you get paid for both parts of the trip whereas trains going empty on a return trip will probably make you go bankrupt.

But it doesn't work with horse carts, does it? Because horse carts can move any type of cargo, and if you select particular one (say, Livestock in your example), it won't take anything else (Food) on later. And if you keep cargo type on "Automatic", it will pick both Grain and Livestock...

Horse carts will pick up anything, so going one way with grain/beef and coming back with food will work just fine. Later one when u get trucks that are open/tanker/closed versions, can do beef/food with the same truck type

Do not use 2 different lines the game doesnt like that!

Use ONE line but have 4 rail lines with 4 trains IE

| | | |......| | | |
| | /| |......| | /| | < these 2 rail lines Do not converge leave the trains stuck on either side of it
| | | |......| | | |
2............2
\ line 1 /
| station |

I really think a screenshot would illustrate your point a lot better. I have no idea what's going on here.

I believe he's saying don't transport both grain and livestock, transport one or the other.

I agree - I tried splitting one route over 2 tracks next to each other with 2 lines names. It went wrong quickly as it would give out inconsistent volumes per line, I found it easier to have 2 track but call it one line. I would force a train onto say track 2 and then remove the joining piece of track. Much better.

2 trains with grain and 2 trains with lifestock on the same line. But otherwise you can also use mixed trains.

I had some failures with farm-processing plant line. In the end what works somewhat OK for me is a train that carries the same amount of each and returns with some food produced and processing plant is also connected to one another town. I was able to produce nice profits with such a setup. I play on hard difficulty but other than that one line I only used passenger lines in my game.
