Where to get a height map from?
Hello,
i am looking for a height map ganerator or something like that. I woul like to build a map that takes place in the northern part of germany, but i cannot find a height map. Isn't here something where I can take an area and then get the hight map for that?

Look for DEM data for your area, that will give you accurate data, although i don't know if the game will accept that directly or if you need to convert it in some way as i have not tried creating a map myself

Terrain party is a place to download actual earth maps from. All you need to do would be to clean [smooth out] the map up assuming it doesn't load correctly in-game.
There are a few map generators online, however you'd also need to use a game related resource to place towns and industries.

http://terrain.party/
download maps from the World over

there's also a guide on Steam that is useful with this.
use this link

You'll need to use this to add towns and industries. when done it creates a map with the relevant places and locations in a folder. This needs to be saved in your game folder

right click on the game in your list
>> right click on Properties
>> open the popup
>> click on the local files tab
>> browse local files
[it'll open up the directory in question for the game
add the relevan folder with the map and place it in here]

Location of game Steam/steamapps/common/Transport Fever

you'll see a directory list like this

dlcs
maps <<<<<<<<<< [place it in here]
mods
res
[along with a list of application extensions]

Use by quite a few people playing Cities Skylines

If [IF] you have Cities Skylines, you can even use this to help clean [smooth/level] the map if it's way to steep/mountainous. You'll soon know because if you try to load it and get an error message about roads etc you can more or less gaurantee that it's due to mountainous terrain [they'll look like a series of peaks and troughs]

I'll add this program to the already exhaustive list compiled by wabbithunta:
https://www.transportfever.net/filebase/index.php/Entry/2404-TF-Map-Viewer/

It's a really useful tool that let you see in detail your map and place towns and industries (by partially automatizing the editing of coordinates in the lua file). If you learn how to use it, combined with a graphic editor, It's the only tool which help you to make a mountainous map usable in game, without having to smooth the mountains too much.

Hahaha.. I was actually on that site earlier on today. If I'd seen this then I'd have added it too.
Thanks for that, that'll come in handy for me as well.
Much appreciated, neldot. ;-)

There is also this Minecraft map editor:
http://www.worldpainter.net/

It can work with 16 bit PNG files.

You need to resize maps to have an edge length of 128*n for Worldpainter.
As compared to TPF where it is something 128*n+1. (I am referring to the "+1")

You can download some high detail DEM (digital elevation model) from several websites.
For the US there is the NED10 model - 10 m resolution elevation model.

This is a 20 m DEM from Austria:
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-austria

And there is QGIS, a professional GIS software (OS and free) you can use it to extract smaller subsets from the larger DEMs.
