More lines can access it at the same time. Think it has a higher capacity as well.

Bus station works for multi line, its like having more lanes for a train station, only it works for buses/trams. Also makes for a better turn around then having a bus "flip" at the end of a street, hence I use them just outside my passenger stations as a starting point for any bus/tram line.

In theory a bus/tram station can manage a higher quantity of traffic. However, it doesn't always work, especially when busy. A bus station next to a busy passenger train station will back up quicker then anything. In addition there is no way to dictate what line uses what platform, and I have on occasion had the situation where almost every line uses one platform and ignors the other.
As a rule I only use them as the end points of 'cross town' type services, and that is more fore artistic effect then need. I also tend to set my bus/tram routes up as circular routes which as a rule are almost always stops rather then stations

Also Bus Stops can be used as delivery points for Cargo to the Industries and Commercial buildings, handy, since Bus Stops have some of the biggest catchment areas in the game.
