It would immediately break the game. If not by crashing the game itself, it would crash your supply chains.
What if the loco you auto-upgrade because newer is much weaker, and your trains can't even go up an incline? Or so much more powerful and expensive you'll be in minus? Or if your newest passenger car is high-speed, high-capacity, very expensive in purchase and running costs and all your lines immediately become a financial catastrophe?
No, all things consdered, it would be not only impossible but game breaking as well.
And we didn't even talk about the few thousand mods that are different in balancing, running costs, etc etc.
Busses, trucks and trams on the other hand are usually pretty straightforward.
I would like to see at least a semi-automatic upgrade system, where you can choose to replace all [old model] with [new model] where both models are a user selectable vehicle/set. That way you could quickly replace all old busses with new busses, or replace a specific train configuration with an equivalent-but-better configuration without affecting other vehicles.
Unfortunately it's unlikely to ever happen :(
Remember how upgrading vehicles went in the initial version of Train Fever ??.... Now THAT was tedious ! I think the devs did a great job dealing with that in the later versions and TpF.
You don't have to upgrade *everytime* a new vehicle becomes available. (sometimes the difference is just 1 or 2 pax or cargo) Just make sure vehicle upgrade is set with the same vehicle, i use 75% ( i do think visual wear and tear particularly on train models is quite a bit over the top. They look like coming right out of the scrapyard after only half of their life).
Par example, when the time comes i put each and every bus line dialog on the screen, click the new vehicle for every line in a row, then click 'replace now' for every line in a row and then click all dialogs away. Bob's my uncle in just a couple minutes. I do the same with all tram- and truck lines, all at once as well. No problem really.
Trains i do individually because i might want to change the config depending on passenger or cargo needs. If lots of trains running that *can* be a bit tedious, yes, but i think it's still fun and wouldn't want it to be automated at all.
Just my 2 cents.
But even then, it wouldn't hurt to have an option where i can manually select replace type x with type y now. This way i could control what gets upgraded with what.
