Talk about performance all you want, and I'm not very fond of vanilla auto-generated maps or some models like humans/horses, but the amount of detail you can have in this game is just amazing.
Ofc. this only really shines when you add detail yourself or look at some user-created or campaign maps. Model train set creators are used to this kind of stuff ;)
A few flowers and weather effects don't make up for that, imo.
Thats what the OP wants, right?
Probably the year the OP was born...
But I, for one, am old enough to remember what graphics were like in 1998.

any wagers on how long it will be before someone says the graphics in Transports is better than Transport Fever?
This mod can add more trees when the map is generated:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=797560973
These allow you to add trees, fields and water manually, like shown in the screenshot higher up:
https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197973425744/myworkshopfiles/?appid=446800&requiredtags[]=Brush+Asset
There's also loads of building and other assets you can added:

And if you don't like there terrian colours, there's this mod, and maybe others, that will change the default textures:
