There are no other (AI) companies. It's you against the enviroment. This has been discussed Ad infinitum. If you MUST have an AI to play against in a train game, try Railway Empire (warning: the AI "cheats"), or OpenTTD.

With 1600+ hours in, I'm far from being bored!

Why not act as if a second company is founded with a different colour scheme? Have your buses run within a city and make a different line with different colour scheme to run between two cities. It makes sort of an impression. It really comes down to your own imagination that can make a solution out of a problem!

Hmmm...

Yes, if you can setPlayer() to a bus line and not have to worry about its profit? But then it won't easily be expanded...

Actually, that may be a good method for less profitable airlines later in game.

1600+ hours so it means your enjoying just designing nice routes or railways.. thats nice i like that too. i saw some youtube videos and the routes look amazing. Thats why im trying to use mods. But i think some mods are not working.
But im sure i cant play 1600+ hours and no get bored... impossible for this game to be honest. I might take a look at RE, thanks

Some people like doing the "model railroad thing", creating beautiful "layouts", and this game is good for that. But most of my 1600+ hours are trying to make the most effecient routes to make money. It's the financial aspect of the game that has me hooked. I hate lines that are in the red. I either figure a way to make them profitable- or if I can't, I'll just delete 'em.

I understand what you mean and why your playing this game. And of course i respect that opinion.
Although at this point for me, this game more like model railroad thing. And actually im surprised why they dont have something like sandbox.
Probably i will change this idea if i put more hours into the game as you did.
We will see.
Thnx

You can have a "sandbox" mode. Just install the No Costs mod. No expenses (well, except for loan interest), and everything can be built/bought for free. You'll be making millions in nothing flat.

A slightly different challenge is the scenarios/campaign.

I was turned off by them at first, but came back a second time and finished them all. It took me a long time, and then I went back to get all of the medals, which increased the difficulty.

This approach might be more fun for you, if you are turned off by single player sandbox titles with no AI. I can appreciate wanting more of a challenge, but what was mentioned above, about efficient and also profitable rail lines was a good point as well. It can also be challenging to distribute goods successfully.

Strange really, I got about 200h by playing the campaign three times ;)
Enjoyed the scenarios, charme and challenge, besides learning the mechanics. You might not need quite that much time, but how you understood/got good at these mechanics in 3h freeplay is beyond me.
An AI would probably do nothing else but what missions/medals do, give some (time) restrictions. There is no such game with a good AI anyway. What you do in RE is buy the AI before it buys you. That's a more annoying time restriction imho.

*I've seen that there is now a beta AI update for RE, which might improve it, but I have not tested yet. Ofc. a decent AI implementation, at least with (limited) usage in scenarios, could be possible, but do/did not really miss it. Would rather see that time invested f.ex. in a decent co-op.

For me the joy of this game has been in building good transport networks and then trying to make them more efficient over time. On this current play through I am also focusing on "beauty and realism", which means track layouts as flat as possible and I plan on doing a lot of detailing to make the world look vibrant and realistic. It's very much like building my own track play set. If you don't see the joy in watching trains go around and riding through your network in first person, then this game probably isn't for you. I've never felt the need for a visible competitor as I am not sure what it would add.
