How do you distribute goods in a city?
If I'm moving food from a cargo (road) depot near the food producer, how do I distribute it in the city? Do I really have to build road depots all over the city to fully distribute the food?

Thanks

Usually, commercial buildings would usually in a group, sometimes at a train station in later developed cities. So the best way to get the most profit is by delivering it to the shops with the highest shopping facilities, that's the way I think it works. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Apologies in advance, but as you're asking this question I'm assuming you haven't played this game? This is a basice route setup that is shown in the Tutorials.

Basic A-B routing

Use Road Depots (Freight Transport).
Add one next/near to the relevant building you want to transport from and place another within the town in question, making sure that any/all depots cover manufacturing and commercial buildings. (Blue and Brown. Green buildings are where your Sims live)
Use the pop-ups for towns to show the building types to help you place any Depots in the best locations to ensure that buildings are covered, it also it depends on how large the town is, as to the size of your depot as the larger the depot the larger the coverage area will be.

No real need to cover where your "public" live (Green buildings), as they will be automatically be supplied by the commercial/industrial buildings within the game itself, when any cargo is delivered by the relevant route. So as long as the supply chain is complete, and working correctly, then the town will be supplied.
Then create a route (to/from A - B) and then buy/add your freight transport to carry items to/from the relevant places.

This is covered in the tutorials/scenarios, as they'll give you targets to achieve in them and these will help you understand what to do within any future game you'll play.

Also there are guides that will help you with the game, in this forum.

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks, I haven't played the tutorial (usually don't) but now I see by your post that it's got an industrial, commercial and residential simulation so if I put a depot near a commercial zone, they will distribute to the residential zones. I HAD thought that I needed to personally distribute food (or goods) to the residentials myself.

Much appreciate your time, I'll likely play the tutorial in this game to get a better understanding of how it works.

Hint: it doesn't have to be a depot. You can deliver goods to bus stops (they don't store goods, etc. like depots, but you can drop goods off at them and receive the same amount of money).

Fair point, but I was talking basics. ;-)

I have another question(I am new to the game),I did the tutorial but it does not explain how many trucks are needed. The one tutorial about stone delivery tells you how many cars you need,so would that be a rule of thumb more trucks the better? What I mean is when is it best to expand and get more busses, trucks and so forth or is it just when the city gets bigger just get more or everything?
genemead Jun 10, 2018 @ 11:57am
It will vary.
I'd shoot for whatever it takes to keep up with demand at the time.

I said "It will vary" because production goes up and down. At one point you'll be buying trucks to keep up with demand, 15 minutes later you'll be selling some because production (temporarly) went down. Sorry, there is no "magic" formula. Start small, add as needed, monitor production, sell as needed.

Check column "Rate" of the line, compare to Production, compare to city need. Adjust capacity as required.

I did re-play the tutorial, just the fun of it, and play after the medal....

I set the train ...up to 5 cars... as my rule of thumb, just to get started, and when it is time for a truck, just add one truck...as my standard to start a map with cargo, so when the need is there to add more trucks ( more bricks was waiting ) ... so I add one truck at the time...if I need more truck on a line, just add more trucks until the line is ...saturated...see a lots of trucks waiting in line ...like a line up of cars at a Tim Horton drivethrue, just send them to the depot for selling.

In this map, I have limited choices ( truck only and Grain / Stone / Coal / Iron wagon was available ) I did the Stone - Brick and a Grain - Food at the other town. I use bus stop for drop off only and truck terminal for cargo pick up ( Brick and Food ) what I call "Inter City Cargo ". That work IF you have two town with two different products - Town A -- Food near by , Town B - Bricks near by. I place one bus stop in the center of a commercial zone, in Town A, Town A have bust / Terminal combo in the industrial zone. Town B have bus / terminal combo in the commercial zone and a bus stop in the industrial zone.

Town B

Town A

Here both A and B .... As you can see, the "Inter City Cargo" line add to the demand of the products ( Foods / Bricks ) at the factory, justify the need of more vehicules and increase trains capacity if needed. As for the traffic issue, build a 4 lane street / highway with bus lane, along the trucks route, the trucks wont be stuck in traffic, and use the "HOV" lane or in this case - Commercial Vehicule Only lane

If you start on a map, and the town is small, one bus stop in the middle of downtown is just fine...to deliver cargo / pick up / drop off passagers.

In this map, I use some mods ( Z increase, Industry add and some vehicules )

To raise ridership on my passenger train lines, do I need to place buses and bus stops around the city with one of the stops being near to the train station to get ridership of my trains up?

Yes, if the city is too large to be serviced by your train station alone.
If there are small towns close by that are too small to be worth a direct train connection, you can also connect them to the train station with a bus line.

If I may add a couple of other things to keep in mind:

The little pixel peeps travel home to industrial or home to commercial and back again, a significant number (majority?) will travel to a destination in another town, they don't travel between residential areas.

There are two types of passenger, those who like fast and those who like cheap. So, it will nearly always pay to have both train and buses (or stagecoaches) between two towns. If the towns aren't large enough to support a train service, make a bus route.

I created a guide outlining some of the types of bus route you might use within a town and although profits are very much dependant on the actual town environment itself, I think there are some key factors that can be generally applied: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1084787993
