What you noticed is totally normal for a diesel powering up and being reved like the one in the video. As it came up to speed as it left the station the visible smoke entirely disappeared. Which is my point. Diesels at working RPM make very little visible smoke.
I'm gonna try that mod. Thanks.
(Of course, this was diesel exhaust, not black smoke like we get in-game. I also caught a Frieghtliner loco starting up in Ipswich and that was basically one burst of very visible diesel smoke and then nothing - and even that initial burst was nothing like what the 37 was putting out in actually running.)
Been there, done that. Doesn't work very well.
The mod suggested by Software Simian does work well. A little too well in some cases though overall is an excellent mod.
