Note that steel bridges allow faster speeds than wooden bridges, but are more expensive.... and, of course, you'll need faster trains and lots of straight, flat track to get "up to speed".
The overall balance between reality and game I wouldn't say is particular off for my tastes... it's just a shame the utility of high-speed trains is limited by the hard-cap on ticket cost that makes long routes not function... otherwise it'd probably be great fun to play on a huge 1:5+ aspect map.
Hmm... I've wondered recently... whether the hard-coded ticket price cap is an absolute figure, or generated based on other factors.
If it was a fixed constant somewhere in the code... I wonder if it'd be possible to mod all of the costs and incomes in the game to a uniformly lower amount (say, all things cost 10% default, all cargo/passenger income provides 10% default) so that effectively nothing changes in the regard besides a decimal place, but it might sidestep the cap.
Something tells me it's unlikely to be that simple :-P
I am no coder and I had some things I wanted to change so I went straight forward and looked at stuff that does similar things and then ooked at the files. I managed to squeeze out 2 mods the last days. Never thought it would be that easy :D
You do have knowledge of coding so maybe you'll find a way.
We could also send the devs some cookies for christmas and ask them nicely to remove that cap or provide access to it...
I have my own mod (based on the North American class system, with additional HSR speeds) that not only does this, but costs maintenance to go higher speed to encourage lower speed... not on the workshop though.
