No I didn't try to set the "macGraphicsMode". It was enough to change the lines you mentioned.
Thats a good tip to limit the growth of population, I'll try that and let you guys know whats a limit of that kind of a system.
I totally agree. But as I initially thought it was a OS based problem I already started a thread before figuring out what it acutally was. Sorry for almost duplicate thread. At least I hope that other High Sierra users will find the answer quicker now.
At first I thought it still loads the game and waited quite a bit (not more than few minutes though). But I noticed that while waiting, my cursor was a game one, but as soon as there was any other background action (like notification or smth), the cursor turned to a carousell.
And later it turned into carousell within ten seconds or so. So I'm pretty sure it crashed.

Have you checked the integrity of the game files?
If not, have you uninstalled and reinstalled the game?
Try lowering the resolution in the game for now untill Apple/UG can find a solution.
