Put a truck statioin next to a passenger station, then run a freight train to the town. The cargo is transfered to the truck station for delivery to any consumer not in the catchment area.
Put a bus/tram station or bus/tram stop next to that passenger station, and passengers will take the bus or tram if their destination isn't in the catchment area.
You can do the same thing with a freight station. But you can't load passengers at a freight station and you can't load cargo at a passenger station.
You can unload cargo even without a fright truck terminal nearby. In this case the cargo will go to the town buildings in the catchment area. If you have a truck terminal there and have a truck lovet going to other parts of town, then indeed cargo will transfer from train to the truck station.
Even what OP mentioned combining the stations together in Train Fever this didn't affect the way they behaved.
There are a couple of mods out there where a bus/tram stop has been incorporated into a (passenger) railway station.
Of cource that passanger stations unload only, but such a lovely tiny bus stop works as perfect drop point for trucks, just next to cargo train station. Also get noticed, those unload only stops, effectively prevents cargo from wildly spreading all over the map.
"Any" except bus/tram stations.
The private bus / tram station, next to the personal train station - each marked with its name - are two station names next to each other. After merging it would be a personal bus / tram station + train station, but it should have one name.
The same could be done with a caravan and a bus / tram station, possibly connecting several stations - bus / tram + train + airport + harbor. As a result, the four stations would be linked under one name. Multifunctional multi-mode station.
But I did not remember to connect together personal and costly stations together!
Friends, I thought so:

The mode where the tram is incorporated into the train - I know, but there is no possibility to assign a bus station.
It also was a fairly abusable feature for similar reasons, so I'm not entirely surprised it's gone.
He did not understand it at all. It is logical that a train station in X city with a bus station in Y city will not be merged.
This is the merger of stations of the different modes of transport that stand next to each other.
If you have a bus station in X, next to the train station in X - both are marked separately in the list of stations. Each with its transport icon.
By subtracting these stations, instead of two stations, one appears, but for those modes of transport that are there.
At the same time, the stations will be shorter and clearer.
Excuse my English - it's not my native language.
Yes. I understand that, but my comment you quoted was in response to something pyoro-2 said about Train Fever where it seems you could link stations in different cities...
No problems with your English. Better than my German, Russian, Polish, Czech (or whatever).
No, "he" was referring to Train Fever, where there is a "Group" option that does exactly this. But it was removed (in Transport Fever) in favour of the new 'catchment area' requirement.
