I'd love a way to select map size and town/factory density separately.
I love bigger maps because it takes longer for vehicles to travel in the later years of the game and feels more legit (and better use of high speeds!). However, I dislike the number of towns it places on the bigger maps because then vehicle speeds are generally wasted as a majority of your vehicles only hop 1 or 2 towns and it's very fast (They don't even reach top speeds).

I'd love a setting where I can say something like "large map, but medium town distribution" so there's just more open space between towns/factories. It will make the beginning of the game more difficult and even slower, but the ~1950's+ will feel way more interesting, IMO. I'd love to see something like this added.

With the map mod you can change density and other aspects when you generate new vanilla maps.

Yep, that mod will do it well. You'll need to change the config and it might need some trial and error experimenting.

On my current game, a medium 3:1 map, I used:
modConfig.townArea = 15.0
modConfig.townInitSize = 1.4
modConfig.industryArea = 8.0

Which is about 5-8 large towns and one of every industry with a few duplicates. You'd probably want more industries tho (a lower value).

I'll try that out, thanks!

Does Max Production = 400 mean they'll never upgrade passed 400? I would want factories to retain their default behavior (1,2,4,8,1600 prod) and everything else to be completely vanilla except town/industry density. Is that what this translates to or do I need to edit the value?

You can change these values in the base_config file too - I play on megalomaniac map sizes with area pr city set to 30 - generates about 20 cities on the map and makes the distance between cities fairly long. Interestingly the game performance is hardly affected at all by the map size, so if you want better performance this is a good way to go about it
