Upgrading trains
I'm guessing there is something I am missing and can't find an answer so need some help if I may thanks guys.

It happens when I send a train to depot to upgrade. I buy the new train and click "up" and it always puts the engine at the back. To get it back in front I drop the carriages down until the engine is the only thing left and then put the carriages back up.

For the life of me, I cannot imagine devs designed it like this so I'm assuming I'm being stupid and am missing something obvious. What is it?

Nope, the consist is constructed in the way you add items. So, if you don't have a locomotive first but add one later on it will go at the end.

Even when I'm upgrading the engine?

Yes, probably because most of the time people build completly new trains. Don't forget that if you replace the locomotive but keep the cars the age of the train will remain high.

If you bring up the replacement window and delete the engine, when the new engine is automatically added it will go on the front. Additionally the entire train will be renewed to 0 years.

I thought ae above stated by Blokker_1999 that the age used to remain the same with the older cars, but I have found that is not the case anymore. Don't know if this was an intentional change.

I have found in the later stage of the game that there are no newer cars, so just changing the engines refreshes the entire train which is much quicker and easier to do.

Note that if you try to double-head a train (or add a reverse-facing second unit), the second engine for some reason goes on the rear and you have to replace all the cars in this case.

The OP It's talking about updating the train manually in the depot where he only replaces the engine. But it would work the same way, if you delete the engine first and then you buy a new one, it will be placed in the beginning, if you already have the engine, then it will be added to the end. But still the carriages will stay old.

If the engine would always be added to the front, we would lose the freedom of placing it where we want it.

Where else do you want it?

I have not played for about a month now, when did it change that the age of the train went to 0 if one just replaced the engine? Last I played the age of the cars also came into play.,

It still does. I believe he was talking about the automatic replacement tool, where also the carriages will get replaced.

Yes, if you do the automatic replacement you just have to delete and replace the engine for the entire train to reset to "0" years old. But you do have to delete and replace all of the cars if you want to add a second engine at the front.

I have also found that if I don't reset the percentage back to 100% from 25% (even if the auto replacement is turned off to the "no" setting), I keep getting warnings that my vehicles need to be replaced when they are only about 9 years old which can get a bit overwhelming.
