This is my model railroad
I've been playing since day 1 of Train Fever and day 1 of Transport Fever. I just got doen with another fun session and felt like I needed to get a few thoughts out.

I had model trains and a few layouts since I was 5 and my dad helped me build my first layout. Unfortunately, between ages 20 and now (46), I haven't had the time or space to build a proper layout. These games have filled that void. For me, they are the perfect balance between planning a layout and running trains.

I haven't even played the scenarios. I've been having too much fun with the Free mode and random maps. I have to also send a big "thank you" to the modders. There are some great stations and trains available now. Keep them coming!

I hope to follow this rambling praise up with a few helpful posts about planning routes, stations, and track/signal layouts.

To the devs, thank you so much for this great game!

Same here I was looking to finaly invest in my own train set, but then Train Fever came along. It's so much more fun then a train driver simulator as well.

I had a large layout then we moved, we got pregnant and my layout room became a nursery!
How ever yes i agree we have some good modders[ something i would love to do if i had the skills] i am playing in freegame and enjoying a south georgia map even though i read russian.
to that modder i say:steamhappy: job well done!

For me too it's a model railroad.
And the modders make it even much better! Seeing those models running on a 27inch 1440p monitor gives so much detail.

My Model Railway has been packed away (lack of space) for many years (I'm 64) but this is better (in many ways) than a Model Railway!. I found (with a Model Railway) that once I had built it I lost interest in it, it was working out the layout, building the tracks and the scenery rather than running the trains that I enjoyed the most. I suppose if you were more into shunting and train operations then you could go for Train Simulator or something similar but I really like TF because it has a Tycoon (like Transport Tycoon) type element, and zooming into the vehicles, the graphics are so amazing and I'm lucky (in a way) my computer broke down a few months back and I had a local company build a pretty much state of the art (i7) PC computer (I debated for some whether I should have a Mac)!. This is far removed from the old Transport Tycoon and Transport Giant games I used to enjoy!. I'am quite obsessed with this game at the moment to the neglect of other great games like Planetcoaster!. I haven't tried modding yet I'm a bit concerned it will destable the game!.

Like the others, I too wanted to build a model railroad. And did a lot of on-line research (guage, layout plans, etc.) But it dawned on me that it was the planning and building that was the big time consuming important thing. What do you do after it's done? You can only watch the train(s) go around in circles for so long.... then it's planning and building the next, bigger, layout.

TPF is a wonderful substitute for a model train layout. (Not to mention a whole lot cheaper and takes up less space!)

Consensus for Train and Transport Fever vs Actual Model Rail:
  • Cheaper
  • takes up less room (no kicking baby to the curb)
  • fast set up
  • trucks and cars actually move and do stuff (no static Matchbox stuff)
  • you can actually ride the Trains
  • Locomotives and rolling stock don't fall off the track (re-railers anyone?)
  • try flying a 747 from your model railroad

Anyone want to add anything?

EDIT: for those who miss the actual Model Railroading experience:

@BuffHamster, “Model Railroading experience”

I missed that, thats so funny, I hope the author ports it over.

Agree with everything everyone said, this is a model railroad, I have been collecting n-scale trains for a while (as BuffHamster knows), but my layout consists of a few small sections, more like unconnected dioramas then a layout. It just takes sooo much time.

Only thing I can add: It’s easer to redo what doesn't work
