You get less income because you don't have to worry about round 13 rainbows or MOABs until round 27 in defend mode.

Dude, defense mode can be easy, you have to invest into your income early game, wether it is with a banana farm or spamming the +2 / +30 (I think) / .......

Defend mode is really easy right now. Like, it was easy when the starting income was 50, and it's even easier now. Best advice I can give is to be as greedy as possible. Before you build ANY towers, save up for the $1000 income boost, then buy something cheap like a dart monkey, submarine, or boomerang. Be sure to keep buying the $1000 boost when it comes back, and eventually the $7500 boost.

Defense mode is fine. Remember, you and your opponent have to defend against the same waves at the same time (unless one of you is using 2/X Agents). So if you can't handle it, you're viewing the mode wrong.
Don't try to beat your opponent in defense, try to beat the bloons. Try practice mode if you must.

Defend mode does seem like a huge drop in eco if you're only used to playing Assault, and it does require a completely different type of game play - don't be afraid to lose lives! As Oberic said, use Practice mode to perfect your skills :)
