Probably it is not polite to refer other games while being in a specific-game forum?
Ziggurat is a classic, and I've heard that Immortal Redneck got improved a great deal in later patches, there's Tower of Guns which I'm not familiar with.
Personally I find that the games like Hypergun or mothergunship have too weak combat with enemies that barely react to being fired, just a boring white flash, no sparks, no decals, no blood spurts, no nothing, meaning that shooting translates to a boring "chipping away at healthbars of braindead hordes" experience instead of feeling like you're firing a high powered slug at some poor enemy who gets knocked back at the very least from the punch of your projectile, with sparks and/or blood flying out from the point of impact.
So I would avoid those.
If you just want a fast paced old school shooter that feels great, then Dusk, AMID EVIL, Overload, and hopefully in the future Ion Maiden.
Project Warlock looked promising, until I saw the horrible level design, dumb AI, slow movement speed, head bob that you couldn't turn off, no FOV slider, wonky balancing on upgrades/weapons/spells, no actual graphical customization, just whacky ones, and hit and miss music.
Then there's the classics, FEAR, Doom, Quake, Shadow Warrior, Painkiller, Serious Sam, AVP2000, Wolfenstein, Half-Life, all their old and some new iterations have satisfying combat, also I guess Shadow Warrior 2 has some lessons from rogue-lites with procedurally generated levels & random loot, with excellent combat.
Recommended:
Ziggurat
Tower of Guns
Mothergunship (sequel to Tower of Guns)
Immortal Redneck
Sublevel Zero (6DOF)
Eldritch
Strafe
Others in the Genre, I wouldn't recommend these, but they're there if you see something that strikes you're interest:
Fancy Skulls
Paranautical Activity
Heavy Bullets
Wasted
Rogue Shooter
Bunker Punks
Killing Room
Delver
One More Dungeon
Depths of Fear: Knossos
@Nathan, I was ignorant to release of Immortal Redneck, so I don't know how different it is from launch, but it seems like it's a straight up clone of Ziggurat.
@Blood I'm still looking up most of the games on that list but so far they are all looking like ones I want to try, thank you very much.
One More Dungeon, Project Warlock, Mad Sector, Midnight Ultra, Dusk, Intrude, Minimized, Forsaken Remastered, Autumn Night.
Not the same as Strafe but all of them are fun FPS
